Acerca de BACK TO MAIN Work, Meet Life. The most important part of who we are is outside of working hours. Let's recognize that too. Though you might spend a large portion of your time on the clock for your work team, you lead a whole life out there that doesn't include MCI or Gamut. So let's celebrate the good news, exciting updates, welcome new babies, see your pets, watch your kid make that soccer goal, and even share in the tough stuff that could use a little support. We could all use a moment to smile, celebrate, and just be human. Here's the space to do it! Let's go Gamut Marathoner, Katrina Ramey! Congratulations are in order for Katrina Ramey, who has impressively completed the Chicago Marathon! Her dedication and hard work paid off with an outstanding finish time of 04:15:19. This achievement is not only a testament to her physical endurance but also her unwavering determination and commitment to excellence. Katrina's accomplishment is an inspiration to us all, showcasing the remarkable results of perseverance and discipline. We are incredibly proud of her and look forward to celebrating more of her achievements in the future. Well done, Katrina! 🎉🏃♀️ Congrats, Bobby! Congratulations to Bobby Gudger for securing first place in the kayak category at the Crafting for Kids Canoe, Kayak, SUP race held on October 7, 2023. Bobby's dedication to his own health and fitness journey not only brought him this well-deserved accolade but also shone a spotlight on two remarkable charities. The Masonic Home for Children at Oxford: This year marks the 150th anniversary of the Masonic Home for Children in Oxford, NC. A beacon of hope and support, the home has sheltered over 11,000 children throughout its history. Currently, it serves as a nurturing abode for approximately 80 children. Beyond providing a roof over their heads, the organization has extended its support to over 27,000 children this year alone, offering various forms of aid and care. Gold Star Family/Mothers Recognition: October holds special significance as it's Gold Star Family/Mothers month, a decade-long tradition honoring the resilience of families who have lost a parent in military or law enforcement service. This program plays a crucial role in supporting teens during some of their most challenging times, acknowledging the sacrifices made by their loved ones in service to our country. Kitty looking for a home! The Rukse family is at it again, extending a helping hand, one cat at a time! We'd like to introduce you to Jule, a charming young ginger kitty who appeared in late October. He wasn't microchipped and, unfortunately, no one seems to be searching for him. He may have been lost or left behind, but we've made sure to provide him with food and shelter in the meantime. Jule has shown interest in becoming an indoor cat, but our household has reached its limit for permanent furry residents. However, we're collaborating with a local rescue to offer him temporary indoor fostering until a forever home is found. For anyone interested in adopting this delightful and handsome guy, please reach out to us (crukse@mcihvac.com ). He was recently taken to the vet, where he was neutered and had his vaccinations updated. He tested negative for common feline diseases and is currently being socialized with other cats. We haven't observed his interactions with children, so a home without young kids would probably be preferable for him.

KR1 KR2 KR7 KR1 1/7 Elevating this to the top spot because our next newsletter update will be celebrating Katrina's remarkable achievements! Meet Katrina Ramey, the Account Manager extraordinaire for our Gamut team. We can't help but boast about her incredible accomplishments. Just last year, Katrina conquered the Chicago Marathon, crossing the finish line with a remarkable time of 4 hours, 30 minutes, and 58 seconds, maintaining an impressive average pace of 10 minutes and 21 seconds per mile! But here's the exciting part: Katrina is gearing up for an encore performance at the Chicago Marathon this October. She's already marked two half-marathons off her list, with three more to conquer. Her race times are improving steadily, as evidenced by her outstanding performance in the Mother's Day half-marathon, where she secured a well-deserved 3rd place finish in her age group. But wait, there's more! Katrina is taking her athletic prowess to a whole new level by participating in her very first triathlon in Culver, IN, this August. And if that's not enough, brace yourself for this: right after the Chicago Marathon in early October, she's set to tackle the Indianapolis Marathon in late October. Can you believe it? Katrina's unstoppable! Congrats, CNA Bailey! Bailey, the granddaughter of Rebecca Caldwell, has achieved a remarkable milestone in her journey towards a fulfilling healthcare career. With determination and dedication, she recently earned her CNA certification and has taken up a vital role at Caramont Regional Medical Center. Bailey's exceptional commitment to her education and passion for nursing caught the attention of Gaston College, where she has been handpicked for a prestigious full scholarship. This scholarship marks her final 'regular' semester of college, paving the way for her entrance into their esteemed nursing program. Congratulations to Bailey for her outstanding achievements; she is on a path to make a significant impact in the world of healthcare!" Employees of MCI & Gamut Embark on Exciting Adventures as Summer Comes to a Close. Andy Lies headed "Out West"! Our journey started with a lengthy drive to Denver, Colorado. Over the course of a couple of days, we explored the stunning locales of Red Rocks and Golden, Colorado. A highlight of our trip was the picturesque drive up the mountain to Bolder Falls, followed by a visit to Lookout Mountain. We also embarked on a hike and paid a visit to Wild Bill's museum and gravesite. The following day, we set out early for a four-hour drive to Moab, Utah. The transition from the Colorado mountains to the vast landscapes of Utah felt like entering another world. Our initial destination was Canyonlands National Park. Here, we spent some time hiking and marveled at what geologists believe to be a fascinating formation created by a meteor impact. With temperatures soaring to 100 degrees, the remainder of the afternoon was dedicated to cooling off in the pool. The next morning, we were up at the crack of dawn to explore Arches National Park. The breathtaking vistas and hiking trails left me speechless – an experience beyond words. Even the kids managed to complete the challenging 3-mile hike to the iconic Delicate Arch. Our journey continued as we drove a few hours to reach Capitol Reef National Park. Nestled between imposing canyons, this is Utah's smallest national park. We had the pleasure of camping by the Fremont River, which meanders through the park, and the kids cherished every moment of our stay. Regrettably, we couldn't find the time to visit the other two remarkable national parks in Utah, namely Zion and Bryce Canyon. However, we're already planning a return trip to explore these incredible destinations. I wholeheartedly recommend anyone in search of adventure to venture out west and discover our national parks. Lacey Knapp took off to the Middle East I had been eagerly anticipating this bucket-list trip with my adventurous friend for an entire year. The question I heard most frequently before embarking on this journey was, "Why Jordan?" To which my immediate response was, "Why NOT?!" Jordan, though a relatively small country, smaller even than the state of Maine, is often underestimated as a travel destination. However, it is a place that offers a captivating blend of stunning natural landscapes and world-renowned historical and religious sites. More importantly, it stands as a safe and secure gem in the heart of the Middle East, waiting to be discovered. Our 8-day adventure commenced in the vibrant capital city of Amman. From there, our first stop was Jerash, a place considered one of the largest and most well-preserved sites of Roman architecture in the world, rivaling even those found in Italy. Jerash's history spans over 6,500 years, making it a captivating journey through time itself. After Jerash, we embarked on a short bus ride to the enigmatic Dead Sea, an extraordinary body of water renowned for its unparalleled buoyancy, owing to its salt content being ten times that of a typical ocean. Regrettably, experts predict that the Dead Sea may vanish completely within the next 25 years, making our visit all the more poignant. Our next destination was a three-hour drive south to the iconic Petra, often referred to as the Rose City. You might recognize it from its appearance in "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade." Petra, one of the "New" Seven Wonders of the World, is a marvel of human achievement, with structures that are both half-built and half-carved into the rock. The city is surrounded by mountains filled with labyrinthine passages and gorges. While "The Treasury" is the most famous feature of Petra, the entire site is vast and awe-inspiring in its scale. We concluded our tour with an unforgettable overnight stay in the Wadi Rum desert. Its surreal landscape is often likened to that of Mars, which is why it served as the filming location for "The Martian" with Matt Damon in 2015. The pitch-black desert sky, devoid of light pollution, offered us a breathtaking canvas for stargazing, complete with a clear view of the Milky Way. Additionally, we had the chance to experience a quintessential desert adventure by riding camels, guided by a local Bedouin. These towering and peculiar creatures added a touch of exoticism to our journey. In summary, our trip to Jordan was nothing short of epic. The place was incredible, and the Jordanian people were among some of the kindest I have met in my travels. I wholeheartedly recommend this remarkable country to anyone seeking an experience that is far removed from our everyday lives. Jordan not only exceeded our expectations but also left us with memories that will last a lifetime. Heartwarming Reunion: Stray Kitty Finds Family After 2 Months! Cheryl Rukse's encounter with a stray kitty on our bustling industrial street stirred concerns. Given this is no place for a lost kitty, she approached the elusive feline, who promptly darted away. A week later, Cheryl spotted the same cat and wisely carried food this time. She offered the cat food and called her "Mommy", and to her amazement, as she placed the food down and stepped back, the cat abandoned the meal to rush towards Cheryl, showering her with affection. Cheryl sought the help of Michelle Alonzo to safely contain the cat. With the arrival of her husband, Phil, and a carrier, they took the cat to the vet and discovered her name was Mimi, missing for two long months. The similarity between "Mimi" and "Mommy" explained her affinity for Cheryl. Mimi's joyful reunion with her family left a heartwarming impression, emphasizing the importance of pet microchipping in reuniting lost animals with their loved ones. Microchip your pets, please! It works! Oh Baby! Lisa Simmons, a valued member of the Gamut team, is eagerly anticipating the arrival of her very first grandchild, who is expected to make their debut in March of 2024! This joyous occasion marks a new chapter, filled with the excitement and love that comes with the arrival of a grandchild. A heartfelt congratulations to Lisa as she prepares to embark on this wonderful journey of grandparenthood!

MCI has achieved Platinum in Associated Builders and Contractor’s STEP Safety Management System . Founded more than three decades ago, STEP has evolved into a world-class safety program that dramatically improves safety performance among construction industry participants, with top-performing Diamond members achieving incident rates 645% safer than the industry average . STEP participants measure their safety processes and policies on key components through a detailed questionnaire with the goal of implementing or enhancing safety programs that reduce jobsite incidents. “Safety is a journey, and that journey is possible because of systems like STEP, which enables ABC member contractors like MCI to have safer and more productive jobsites,” said Greg Sizemore, ABC vice president of health, safety, environment and workforce development. “Committing to total human health is essential to ensure the physical and mental health and safety of our workforce, and I commend MCI for consistently fulfilling those commitments to raise the bar of safety performance.” According to ABC’s annual Safety Performance Report , STEP participants, regardless of company size or type of work, can reduce recordable incidents up to 84%, making the best performing companies more than eight times safer than the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics industry average. Ratings range from Diamond, the highest, to Platinum, Gold, Silver, Bronze and Participant. To learn more about the STEP program, visit abc.org/step . MCI Construction Team is CPR/AED Certified Recently, our organization took a proactive step towards employee safety and well-being by conducting multiple First Aid, CPR, and AED (Automated External Defibrillator) classes. These sessions were designed to equip our employees with essential life-saving skills, and we are proud to report that 65 of our dedicated MCI employees participated in and successfully completed these crucial training sessions. The training covered a wide range of fundamental first aid principles, ensuring that participants gained a comprehensive understanding of how to respond effectively to various medical emergencies. They learned essential techniques, from treating burns and controlling bleeding to dressing wounds and splinting injuries. These skills are invaluable in everyday life and can make a significant difference in emergency situations, both inside and outside the workplace. One of the key aspects of the training was the instruction on cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). Participants were taught how to perform CPR correctly and the vital importance of early intervention in cases of cardiac arrest. Additionally, they learned how to operate an Automated External Defibrillator (AED), a device that can be a critical tool in saving someone's life during a cardiac emergency. Having a team of employees well-versed in First Aid, CPR, and AED usage is a significant asset to any organization. It not only enhances workplace safety but also demonstrates a commitment to the health and well-being of both employees and the community at large. For those who were unable to participate in these recent classes, there's no need to worry. We understand the importance of these skills and are dedicated to ensuring that all employees have the opportunity to learn them. More training sessions will be scheduled in the near future, providing additional chances for our team members to acquire these life-saving skills. ESOP Education Series BACK TO MAIN It's ESOP Statement Time! Great news! 🎉 The first ESOP statements have been MAILED to your home addresses on file today! Delivery times may vary, but you should expect your letter within the next 2-3 days. If you haven't yet qualified to participate in the ESOP, you won't receive a statement this time. We’re thrilled to announce that the per-share value of our ESOP has increased by an impressive 84% since the 2022 valuation! This remarkable growth is a direct result of the hard work and dedication you all demonstrated throughout the 2023 season. The ESOP is valued year over year, and while there will be fluctuations, our goal is to maintain a positive trajectory for the long-term benefit of everyone at MCI. Your efforts have truly made a difference! Let’s review some details so that you understand what you are looking at in your statements. FYI: New Employees to MCI as of 2023- You will not receive a login until the statement next year when you are eligible to participate in the ESOP. Set your expectations Don’t get dollar signs in your eyes! We’ve said it before, and we will say it again; this is not a get-rich-quick scheme. Our stock valuation can fluctuate, and it will be generally low for the first few years. WHY will the value be low? To become an employee-owned company, the company had to first be sold to the ESOP Trust by the original private owners of the company. The sale will be paid to the owners over time, and that money comes from the annual contributions to the ESOP Trust until that debt is paid off. Think of it like buying a house; you take a loan out to BUY your house from the bank. The bank holds the deed to your house, and you pay off the loan monthly over the length of your designated mortgage terms (typically 30 years for a mortgage, but don’t worry the private loan to the sellers isn’t even close to that amount of time). Once you pay off the loan, the bank gives you the deed, and your house is officially yours at its full market value. In our ESOP—there is no bank. The private sellers have individual private loans based on a fair market sale, and they are assuming all the associated risks. We pay off the loans, (and the company remains profitable), our equity in the company goes up, and our share value will reflect that. What will the Statement look like? This statement is going to be personalized for YOU; your vesting percentage, your number of shares, and the value of that they are worth for year ending 2023. Your information - Near the top, you’ll see your personal information, including your years of vested service, your participation status, and the date your participation started. Last year’s balance - What is in your account as of the end of the last plan year. Forfeitures - There is a new line item on your statement for the 2023 year called “Forfeitures.” These are any shares that were given up, or “unvested” by employees who left the ESOP in 2023. The shares that they left behind go back into the trust and are reallocated to all current participants. Total account balance - This represents the total number of shares associated with your account. Current market value - The per-share value of the company stock as of the end of the plan year, as determined by an independent appraiser (valuation firm). Total account value - What your account is worth at the end of the plan year. Vested percentage - This is the vesting percentage that you have earned based on your years of service and the vesting schedule as defined by the plan. Vested account value - This is the current vested value of your account, based on your vested percentage. This is the amount that will be paid upon a distribution event. ESOP Education Series BACK TO MAIN The History of ESOPs Employee ownership is not a new idea. The earliest reference to employee ownership in the U.S. came from William Meredith, Zachary Taylor’s secretary of the treasury. In 1849, he noted that workers were owners in many enterprises, and thought the idea would be a great way to create a common interest between labor and capital. In the late 1800s, the Knights of Labor, one of the United States’ first unions, created several worker-owned businesses. In the 1920s, leading industrialists called for a “new capitalism” based on employee ownership. Employees were encouraged to buy shares in their own companies, and more than one million did. Unfortunately, none of these efforts endured, and the idea faded away until the 1950s. It was then that a San Francisco-based investment banker and lawyer, Louis Kelso (pictured above) , created the modern ESOP. In The Capitalist Manifesto, a best-selling book written with the philosopher Mortimer Adler (a household name at the time), Kelso and Adler argued that capital investment in new machinery and technology would drive workers into lower-paying jobs, or even out of work completely. Historically, when investments in machinery and technology went up, workers became more productive and were paid more. But Kelso and Adler believed the pace of change in the next generation would be so fast that it would replace a lot of well-paying jobs permanently. People who owned capital would do very well indeed; people who worked for them would struggle to stay in place. So the solution, they argued, had to be for more employees to be owners. Kelso’s predictions have proven true. Real wages (wages adjusted for inflation) since the 1970s, when ESOPs became law, have hardly budged, but an investment in the stock market has grown by about 500% in real dollars. So the problem, Kelso and Adler said, was that not enough people owned capital. They couldn’t afford to just go out and buy it, so there needed to be a way for them to become owners because of the work they do. But how? ESOPs to the Rescue Kelso envisioned a solution. He proposed laws that would give everyone a chance to own capital that could produce income. He called this plan an employee stock ownership plan (ESOP). Rich people and wealthy companies are able to acquire companies by borrowing money. Already having money, these groups could persuade lenders that they would make enough money from the profits of the company they bought to pay off the loan. How, then, could normal employees buy ownership in their own company? With wages stagnant and consumption costs rising, setting aside money to buy stock was not practical for all but a few. If they approached a bank as a group and asked for a loan to buy all or part of the company, bankers would politely laugh. Kelso’s solution was to have the company borrow money on behalf of the employees. The company, not the employees, would take the risk if the loan could not be repaid. The ownership of the capital acquired by the loan would be contributed to employees in the form of company stock. In return, companies could get a tax deduction for buying the shares for employees, paying for part of the cost. The remaining cost, the argument went, could be made up by workers being more productive because they were now owners. Kelso spent almost two decades trying to persuade companies to use this idea, arguing that ESOPs would help improve productivity while simultaneously offering tax benefits. A few adopted Kelso’s idea, but most companies remained concerned that courts would find ESOPs improper and void the tax benefits that Kelso was proclaiming. Kelso needed a law. Russell and Huey Long It turned out that there was just a man to do this. Back in the 1920s, a populist politician from Louisiana named Huey Long was making quite a reputation for himself as state governor, U.S. senator, and presidential candidate. He argued strongly for redistribution of wealth from the rich to everyone else. His career was cut short when he was assassinated by the son-in-law of a judge Long had maneuvered out of office. His son, Russell Long, became a U.S. senator during the 1940s. By the 1960s, he had become the chair of the Senate Finance Committee, the group that writes the nation’s tax laws. That made him one of the most powerful senators. Russell Long and Kelso met in 1974. Long was interested in Kelso’s plan, claiming that Kelso’s ESOP idea was “Huey Long without the Robin Hood”—in other words, ESOPs would make the distribution of wealth fairer without “robbing from the rich.” ESOPs, they believed, were a way to use the capitalist system itself to create a more equitable distribution of wealth within the economy. Instead of allowing rich people to get richer and then taxing them at higher rates (which, Long believed, discouraged investment and could in turn hurt the economy), ESOP legislation aimed to change the way future wealth became owned. Long, inspired by this idea, began a crusade to provide ESOPs with tax incentives and shepherded 17 pieces of legislation through Congress in 12 years. More bills were added after that, the latest having passed in mid-2018. As a result, the government now provides substantial tax incentives to encourage companies to use ESOPs. In most cases, companies borrow money with an ESOP loan and use the money to buy stock from an owner. Instead of borrowing, the ESOP can also buy stock with periodic cash contributions from the company, or the company can just contribute stock to the ESOP. ESOPs are one of the rare ideas to restructure the economy that have support from the right, left, and center, from Ronald Reagan to Ted Kennedy; from the current Republican Party platform to Bernie Sanders and Hillary Clinton. As one poll found, it is as popular as apple pie. Has It Worked? More than 14 million employees are currently owners through ESOPs and similar plans. Research shows that employee-owned companies that promote employee involvement outperform their competitors by a substantial margin and that employees in these plans do substantially better in terms of retirement and other conditions of work. The idea has started to spread to other countries, in large part because of how successful it has been here in the U.S. The idea has a long, long way to go—the vast majority of employees are still not in these plans—but it has come a very long way. Gamut Update BACK TO MAIN Exciting Collaboration: Lighting the Way at CosMc's, Bolingbrook IL We have some exciting news to share on a project that has been shrouded in secrecy until now. Gamut Systems and Solutions is proudly illuminating the path for a new venture in the fast-food industry: CosMc's in Bolingbrook, Illinois. CosMc's, a new and reimagined McDonald's concept, is making waves as a beverage-led, drive-thru-only chain. This innovative approach is poised to rival giants like Starbucks and Dunkin. It's more than just a fast-food outlet; it's a futuristic experience, blending nostalgia with modernity. Gamut is excited to be controlling the lighting systems that set the stage for this unique dining experience. CosMc's isn't just another restaurant; it's a statement. Imagine a blend of the familiar McDonald's ethos with a twist that's out of this world. As described by McDonald's CEO, Kempczinski, the concept of CosMc's is akin to "what would happen if a McDonald's character from the 1980s - part alien, part surfer, part robot - opened a restaurant in 2023." This is a first in our 75-year history, and it's all thanks to your dedication to safety. This incredible milestone also brought us a $30,000 savings on our Workers' Compensation renewal, which benefits everyone!
