Lea began working for his father at Mechanical Contractors, Inc. in 1975, gathering hands-on field experience. He began work as an engineer for the company in 1980. Since 1998, he has overseen the growth and development of Mechanical Contractors, Inc. as CEO.

Lea is a graduate of North Carolina State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering. Lea is a registered P.E. in North and South Carolina and holds Contracting Licenses PH-1, 2 and 3. He is also certified by the Association of Energy Engineers as a Certified Energy Manager (CEM). He has completed the LEED Training Workshop given by the US Green Building Council and achieved status as a Certified Green Building Engineer (GBE) and a Certified Energy Auditor (CEA) by the Association of Energy Engineers. Lea has an intuitive understanding of mechanical systems and creative approaches to difficult design problems.
